M5.4 Blog about your Consumer Confidence Reports (CCR) and water quality

  • What is the source of your drinking water?   Where does your water ORIGINATE?  (It is treated at a water treatment plant, but what watershed or aquifer is the sources of the water?)
    • Cal Water System
  • What chemicals were found in your water that were higher than expected?
    • Fluoride- I understand it is necessary to add fluoride, i guess i never realized how much was really added to drinking water
  • What chemicals did you NOT expect to find in your water?
    • Microbial contaminants: viruses and bacteria (can come from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural livestock operations, and wildlife) - super shocked about this- had no idea this could be a thing!
  • Where does your water come from? The source! Track it from the source to your tap.
    • South San Francisco system includes 144 miles of pipeline, 12 storage tanks, one collect - ing tank, and 21 booster pumps
  • What did you discover about your water quality?
    • The city of South San Francisco tested over 61,000 samples of water annually! I did not realize they test water so many times a day, but I do appreciate the fact that they are attempting to get rid of contaminants and making sure our water is safe multiple times a day.
  • Do you use a filter for your water?
    • If a fridge counts, then yes. we consume the water we obtain from a fridge dispenser.
  • What are you trying to filter out?
    • We know very little about filtering water in my household- i think we obtain our water from the fridge out of habit.
  • Do you drink bottled water?   How does this square with what you learned when you watched the Story of Bottled Water (see next exercise)?
    • I drink bottled water when i do not have my water canteen with me, however i prefer not to because bottled water creates more waste, and the plastic used to bottle water contains harmful toxins.

  1. I don't think fridge water is filtered at all.. it may contain different exposures from the plumbing system inside the fridge as well. and OF COURSE there are bacterial and viral contaminants in water THEY ARE EVERYWHERE.
