Home Assessment


I used to work in property management, so I was aware of some of the safety precautions taken in order to make homes safe and livable spaces. However, I never took the time to assess my own home, which I found quite interesting. I live in a home that was built in the early 1920s, so taking the time to assess such an old home was super fascinating. The electronics in our home are powered primarily by gas, which I was not aware of before and really opened my eyes. I also, never thought about how candles and air fresheners can impact your home health.

I think all things associated with climate change are of huge concern, but after reading the fact sheet I find " Climate change will have the largest health impact on vulnerable populations" to be the most troubling. Only 1% of homes have lead based paint which means we are heading in the right direction  Are there Superfund sites in your zip?  (In your BLOG, make sure to tell us what a Superfund Site is) Superfund sites are  any parts of  land in the United States that have been contaminated by hazardous waste. Thankfully, there are no superfund sites in my zip, considering that they can be super harmful to individuals' health.  What can you tell us about the Superfund sites that are near where you live? M10.5 Blog about an occupational safety and health organization

OSHA has an alliance with AIHA, in which they developed a training/educational programs for both employers and workers.  What I thought was really cool is that these two organizations joined forces and created "1 page cheat sheets" that both employers and employees can use to identify hazards, methods of control, and other useful resources that are related to occupational safety.  When looking at one of the cheat sheets (Quick tips for job health and safety on safe patient handling and mobility), it appears to be a comprehensive list that prompts the reader to ask themselves questions related to their daily tasks/machinery in which they are using to ensure that not only are they safe, but the people in which they are working with are safe as well. Although cheat sheets may seem a bit juvenile, they could be extremely beneficial for those whose job requires them to be "always on the go."
